Professionals Monthly Update
July 2015
In This Issue
Dear Marshall,

The summer months can be hectic and stressful for managers in our industry. Here are a few tips to help you manage for less stress and more success.

  1. Feeling overwhelmed by many small questions and requests from your crews? Remind them of the difference between important and urgent items and those that can wait until a weekly meeting.  Use a weekly meeting to recap issues that can wait.
  2. Frazzled by too many estimates to complete? Do more up front to separate "tire kickers" from real buyers. Say "no" where appropriate.
  3. Feeling a need to always be the "fixer"? If you're a manager, resist the urge to get "hands on" all of the time. Require team members to take leadership to come up with solutions and fix problems. Good question to ask: "what do you think should be done?"   Andrew Carnegie said "No man will be a great leader if he insists on doing it all himself".
  4. Finding the details get lost as crews rush to finish jobs?  Job sites will be cleaner, fewer tools will be lost and paperwork will be done on-time if you create checklists for those repetitive tasks. Everyone should be doing it the right way, right?

Remember we are here to help you reduce the hassles of the busy season. We're committed to your success.   Please let us know how we can help YOU.

Consolidated Turf in Your Community

As a wholesale distributor of parts & supplies for the landscape construction community, Consolidated Turf is often approached by our customers to take part in events that are important to them or their local community.

We were recently approached by Prestige Pop-Up Sprinklers to help out a local school in need. The Calgary Girls School - Lakeview campus contacted Prestige Pop-up Sprinklers to help with their outdoor learning area and Eco Project.

The Calgary Girls School wanted to promote healthy learning and the beautification of their school. The girls went through a process of designing and building an outdoor learning space. Students created landscape designs using Rhino CAD and the best design was voted on.  Working with the staff of the school the girls began the construction process.  They realized they had a need for an irrigation system but did not have the technical expertise, equipment, or funds.  A parent reached out to Prestige Pop-up Sprinklers, and Rain Bird to have a system installed.

Prestige Pop-up's supplied the time, expertise and elbow grease this project has really burst to life. These amazing young ladies have done a wonderful job creating a beautiful space and bringing our community together in the process. Keep up the great work ladies!

NGCOA - Take a Kid to the Course Week: July 6th -12th

The 13th edition of the Take A Kid To The Course program will be running between July 6-12.

Last year's program marked the first year marked over 300,000 junior golfers who have participated over the 12 years. That's a lot of junior golfers being introduced to this great sport across Canada!

Developed by the National Golf Course Owners Association Canada to encourage families and juniors to take up the game of golf, this cross-Canada campaign is designed to illustrate how easy it is to improve both your score and your relationship with your children by bringing them out to the golf course.

HUNDREDS of courses will offer FREE golf to children under the age of 16 who are accompanied by a paying adult during the program.  In addition to free golf, many courses will offer junior clinics, free range balls, free junior club rentals and parent/child tournaments.

Help Your Customers Be More Water Efficient with Toro's Precision Soil Sensor
Be sure your technicians are recommending water-smart upgrades

Most timer-based irrigation controllers can waste water because they don't match the water applied to actual moisture levels in the soil

With the  Toro Precision Soil Sensor, you can offer customers an easy add-on device that reduces water waste by continuously measuring moisture levels in the soil and determining when to allow the controller to water.  It can maximize the efficiency of any system, because it works with ANY standard controller.

Because the soil sensor features wireless communication, there's no digging to get it installed.  Simply connect the receiver next to the controller and place the probe in the yard.   The unit self-calibrates to the site's soil conditions.

You can easily add $100-$150 in easy profit to residential service calls by offering this handy device.  Ask your CTE representative for full details on how to get started.

Sales Tip:  Take along a Precision Soil Sensor

Having one on the truck is the easiest way to make a sale.

Dog Runs are More Fun with Ultimategrass

Constructing a dog run is a great way to keep dogs active and ensure that they get enough exercise, but finding the right materials can be tricky. Gravel and dirt are uncomfortable for dogs to run on and often make for dirty paws. Natural grass is expensive to maintain and cannot easily be kept alive in inclement weather. The ideal dog run surface is soft, durable, and offers substantial drainage. Synthetic turf is the leading green alternative to natural grass, and with its 100% permeable backing, UltimateGrass is your dog run surface solution.

In addition to being pet-friendly and low-maintenance, UltimateGrass is discoloration and stain resistant, making clean-up of dog messes quick and easy. Safe, non-toxic, and chemical-free, it is also durable enough to stand up to even the most challenging of pets.

Last year, world renowned dog whisperer Cesar Millan partnered with
EasyTurf, parent company of UltimateGrass,
on the 10,000 sq. ft. installation of artificial grass at his Dog Psychology Center in Santa Clarita, California. It has also been installed in countless dog parks, animal shelters, animal hospitals, pet resorts, and veterinary clinics throughout North America. The experts agree that installing UltimateGrass makes dog runs cleaner, more comfortable, and more fun!
